Did you know that this week (April 12-18, 2015) is National Library Week? In honor of this week I am going to share a couple new books from our friends at Sleeping Bear Press each day and give you all some great suggestions to ask for on your next library trip or to add to your home library!
Today let’s talk tales about tails.
The Legend of the Beaver’s Tail :: based on an Ojibwe legend this adaptation from author Stephanie Shaw is a great way to share this delightful story with children of all ages. Illustrator Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen brings Beaver and his friends Deer, Fish, and Bird to life as Beaver learns a lesson about friendship, vanity, and selfishness. Besides for the previously mentioned lessons that Beaver learns in the story this book is a great way to share an American Indian legend with kids. Teachers (and homeschoolers) will find this an easy book to incorporate in any lessons about Native American legends. Ages 6-10; 32 Pages; 9×11 inches
Tallulah: Mermaid of the Great Lakes :: did you know that according to legend every mermaid has a special gemstone hidden somewhere in the sea? Neither did I until we read this delightful story about Tallulah: Mermaid of the Great Lakes and discovered another special story about our beloved Great Lakes. Tallulah is not like the other mermaids with their bright and shiny tails. With her dull gray tail she has trouble finding her special gemstone until a wise sea turtle suggests that she look in the Great Lakes. After a thorough search Tallulah and Turtle discover exactly where this little mermaid is meant to belong. Written by Denise Brennan Nelson and illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung. Ages 6-8; 40 Pages; 11×9 inches
I hope you enjoyed learning about these two delightful tales about tails. Check back in tomorrow as I share some more fun children book selections from Sleeping Bear Press.
