Weekend trips can be the easiest way to get away, and often the hardest to pack for! Unless you are a super low-maintenance gal or you live an ultra minimalist lifestyle, packing an overnight bag can feel a little daunting. What if you forget something you really need? This simple packing method helps eliminate the urge to throw everything into your bag just in case…a little planning and you will quickly be on your way.
The Five or Less Method is a take on the capsule wardrobe; the idea of having a limited number of essential clothing pieces that you can pair multiple ways. It simplifies your closet and life, and works wonders when deciding what to bring for a weekend away.
Packing can get overly complicated. Choosing clothing pieces that complement eachother minimizes the stress of packing separate outfits and accessories for each potential activity on your trip.
You start with your weekender bag. One bag… that’s all you’re allowed!
Once you’ve decided on your bag, you get to pick two pairs of shoes. This is where I think most of us get into trouble, only two pairs?! Think about your planned activities for the weekend. Will you be doing a lot of walking? Is the weather going to be cold or possibly rainy? You’ll want to choose footwear that will be comfortable and appropriate for whatever you plan to do on your trip, and for the weather. If you’re going to be antiquing, maybe a cute and comfy pair of flats will work. But if you’re going hiking on a fall color tour, you’ll definitely want something sturdier like sneakers or boots. Just make sure you choose shoes that can go with several outfit combinations!
Next on the packing list is three bottoms, so either all pants or also include a versatile skirt. (I’m going to stop here and just clarify that since it’s the end of October and I live in the mitten state, my shorts have been stowed away. If you’re in a warmer climate, obviously adapt this method to meet your needs!) Again, decide what your activities are going to demand in terms of clothing and pick three bottoms that can be worn with multiple tops.
Fourth, choose your tops. Think about shirts that can easily go from casual to dressy in case you do a nice dinner out one evening. Pick four of your go-to’s that can be layered or worn separately with any of your bottoms. This could include one short sleeve, one long-sleeve, a lightweight sweater, and a button-up, collared type shirt.
Last, pick your accessories. One pair of earrings, one necklace, one pretty scarf, a pair of sunnies, or a hat. Five of your favorite items to add style, character, and even practicality to your outfits. Choose jewelry and other accessories that can go with any of your outfit combinations. This necklace can be worn multiple different ways including using several of the strands as separate necklaces- the perfect way to get more mileage out of a carefully chosen accessory. A pair of lightweight earrings in gold or silver will go with just about any outfit as well!
That’s all there is to it! You’ll be packed in no time 😉
The next time you plan a weekend getaway, The Five or Less Method is the way to go! One bag, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 bottoms, 4 tops, and 5 accessories. Add in any personal items, your paired down toiletry and makeup products, pajamas, a jacket or coat as needed, and you are good to go. No overthinking, and no overpacking!
Tell me where you’re headed these days! Will you be traveling in a few weeks for Thanksgiving?
