Look at that photo of Lily’s changing area. Notice anything especially awesome? Well, besides the rainbow of fluff on the shelf. Did you spot it yet? It’s the gorgeous bin by Vipp that has become our new cloth diaper pail! I have never felt so design-savvy! The bin is very chic and modern, with a very vintage flair. I adore it! Never thought I’d say I loved a trash recepticle… *smile*
Vipp is an amazing family-owned company that started in 1939 when Holger Nielsen designed a practical and sturdy rubbish bin for his wife Marie’s new salon. When the wives of doctors and dentists had their hair done at Marie’s salon, they spied the stylish and functional bin, which was crisp, clean and durable – perfect for the clinical environment – and Vipp was born! Today, Vipp has an extensive line of beautiful bins and coordinating accessories that have stayed true to the vintage styling and excellent craftsmanship of the original bin that Holger created for Marie. The company is run by Holger and Marie’s daughter, Jette, and her two children Sofie and Kasper.
“Good design never goes out of fashion”, Holger used to say. Time has proven him right; the Vipp bin has only been marginally improved since it saw the light of day back in 1939. Today the bin is internationally recognised as a design classic, and in November 2009 it was accepted into the architecture and design collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The enameled exterior of the bin is easy to clean and holds up to a 1 year old who likes to use it as a drum. The lid and pedal assembly have hydraulics, so the lid closes slowly and quietly. The rubber ring around the top makes a tight seal with the lid, keeping smells contained. The interior galvanized bin is removable, making it easy to take the dirty diapers out to the laundry. I love this bin.
When we move past the diaper stage, I can use this gorgeous bin in my bathroom, kitchen or office without having to hide it away in a cupboard or corner. I can’t wait!
There are a variety of sizes available, in white, black, stainless steel and the annual signature color (2011 was Tangerine Tango and 2012 is Copenhagen Green) – so there is a bin that is perfect for any room in your home. Each bin has specially designed bin liners that fit perfectly. Coordinating items, such as soap dispensers, hooks, and shelves are also available on the Vipp website.
Whether you use the bin as a diaper pail (as I do) or as a waste bin in your living areas, kitchen, bathroom, or at your place of business, you will not be disappointed with it.
The Vipp pedal bin is made with a layer of stainless steel and equipped with a damper mechanism for smooth closing of the lid as well as a rubber ring that guarantees air-tight closure. The body is manufactured in powder-coated steel and hides the removable, galvanised steel inner bin. A rubber ring at the base ensures that sensitive surfaces are safeguarded.
Here’s a video that illustrates the design style and functionality of Vipp Bins:

If you are someone who appreciates both form AND function, and take care in choosing each and every piece in your home, the Vipp bin would be a charming and elegant addition to your living space. my SIMPLE star rating :: 5 out of 5
