Have you ever been to California? California has one of the longest coastlines of any state, starting with brilliant San Diego to the south and Eureka’s hidden gems to the north. Pacific Coast Highway or PCH is a road that extends from Orange County to almost the northernmost border with Oregon. This long stretch of road has countless attractions to experience, but there are a handful of stops every traveler should make to see the major features around the Golden State. Here are 5 top stops to make on the Pacific Coast Highway. I have been to california a couple times and have yet to see these awesome places. I will for sure put these on my list to check out.
The iconic Golden Gate Bridge can be walked, jogged, biked or driven, so choose the best way for everyone in a group to experience this engineering marvel. Parking is found on both sides of the bridge, giving visitors a chance to take a photo and shop at the small gift shops. Take at least a partial walk down the bridge’s length to really get a feel of its size. Huge ships fit easily beneath the bridge, making it exciting for the kids to watch as vessels pass below. Take a break at any hotels in San Francisco before moving down the coastline the following day.
Get a thrill out of the seaside boardwalk lining Santa Cruz County. This old-fashioned coaster defines the coast with a small wharf jutting out into Monterey Bay. You can watch surfers along Steamer Lane or stop for a little fishing excursion on the rocks’ edge. This laid-back town is known for its hippie vibe, good music and attention to environmental conservation. Grab a bite along Pacific Avenue before moving on from this quaint city.
Perched high above the Pacific Ocean is Big Sur. This small town is nearly cut off from all major cities, but keeps its friendliness and artistic nature open to visitors. Big Sur hotels are available for weary travelers looking for a break from the road. Explore the redwoods found above the coastline. These beautiful natural relics are part of the area’s history as they take advantage of the ample moisture in the air.
You can dip your toes in the powdery sand found at Pismo Beach. This Central Coast gem is home to some of the best clam chowder around. On those cool evenings, grab a cup or bread bowl of this thick chowder to warm the hands and body. Surfers love this area too, so be sure to park close to the shore for a show unlike any other. Seafood and ocean appreciation are part of Pismo’s allure.
The Los Angeles area is home to Venice Beach. This eclectic area welcomes many unusual performers and vendors. Park the car and walk along the beachfront to experience magicians, jugglers and every other performer type on weekends and during the summer. You can find all sorts of souvenirs to buy among the distinct storefronts too. Be on the lookout for artists and celebrities as everyone seems to love this beach area.
Renting a car is the best way to explore PCH if you are from out-of-state. Choose a convertible or sporty SUV to comb the ocean’s edge, for instance. It can get misty on the Central Coast, so be sure to have a working rooftop for the convertible. Traveling in California is an adventure that should be experienced by everyone. I would definitely recommend it be on your list of travels.
Who doesn’t love to travel?!?! California has so much to see as you can tell. Where woud you want to see first?
