First clue your kids are going to love a book? The main character on the cover has googly eyes. Yep, as in shake-them-around-and-watch-them-move googly eyes.
Welcome to Cuckooville is a fun book with a message. Written by Susan Chandler and illustrated by Delphine Durand it was a delight to read from start to finish.
Welcome to Cuckooville is the story of Mrs. Gobbledygook, a citizen of Cuckooville, who is the only one to speak a strange indecipherable language. The Mayor of Cuckooville gets fed up with her nonsensical speech that nobody else in Cuckooville can understand.
When some strangers came to town utter chaos reigns until Mrs. Gobbledygook and her foreign tongue are called upon to help out. With some help from a very clever boy named Pete, Mrs. Gobbledygook is able to save the day!
This is a cute story with fun illustrations. The crazy words like “Lumpyplums snufflybapz!” had my girls giggling as my tongue got tied up while reading and they were enthralled with the illustrations of the townspeople and Mrs. Gobbledygook.
The overall message of the book is about how accepting the differences of our friends and neighbors is wonderful for the entire community. This is perfectly conveyed to a young kid (my 5-year-old completely grasped this) while providing an entertainment factor.
I love being able to use silly stories to help convey a teaching point to my kids, so big thanks to Sky Pony Press for another wonderful children’s book in Welcome to Cuckooville!
